LAS VEGAS MONORAIL CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

LAS VEGAS MONORAIL CELEBRATES EARTH DAY AS SOUTHERN NEVADA’S “GREEN” TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

Monorail Reduced Local Emissions by 58 Tons of Carbon Monoxide and Replaced 3.2 Million Vehicle Miles in 2007

In honor of Earth Day, April 22, the Las Vegas Monorail Company is promoting the electric, zero-emissions transportation system to eco-minded Las Vegas visitors as an alternative to traditional automobile and mass transit. Savvy travelers can support an earth-friendly initiative to reduce traffic and pollution simply by riding the Monorail to reach their destinations along the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

“The Las Vegas Strip has been at capacity since the mid 1990s, and as a transportation provider, we recognize the need for transit solutions that address both congestion and pollution. As a ‘green’ transportation solution, the Monorail provides an ongoing means of helping to promote a healthy and sustainable planet through its zero-emissions design,” said Ingrid Reisman, vice president of corporate communications for the Las Vegas Monorail Company. “It is our responsibility to embrace initiatives for cleaner air. We are doing just that with our system today, and will have an even greater positive impact with our airport expansion.”

The Las Vegas Monorail is manufactured and operated by Bombardier Transportation, a global leader in rail technology that has been a vital player in contributing to the business landscape and transportation infrastructure of Las Vegas for more than 20 years.

“Using the latest innovation in rail technology, Bombardier is proud to operate the Las Vegas Monorail system for the city’s visitors as an eco-friendly transportation option,” said Stephen Stowe, general manager of operations, maintenance and monorails for the Total Transit Systems Division of Bombardier Transportation.
“With the Strip’s growing mobility concerns and the ever-increasing need for more transportation options, the Monorail’s current fleet of nine four-car trains incorporates state-of-the-art technological advances that assist in relieving congested roadways, while helping our environment.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that “clean” modes of transportation, like the Monorail, are at the top of its recommendations for effective ways to reduce pollution. In fact, a transportation model statistic calculated by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada indicates that the Las Vegas Monorail reduced emissions in 2007 by more than 58 tons of carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), based on the number of Monorail passengers in 2007. The system also replaced more than 3.2 million vehicle miles traveled during 2007 alone.

Las Vegas Monorail extends operating hours to support Zappos.com Las Vegas Marathon

On Dec. 2, 18  Zappos.com Las Vegas Marathon racers won’t be the only ones running early on the Las Vegas Strip.  The Las Vegas Monorail Company is extending its service to 24 hours on Dec. 2 to help move visitors and marathon supporters along Las Vegas Boulevard South, which will be closed that morning to accommodate the start of the race.

“We are pleased to partner with the Zappos.com Las Vegas Marathon to provide a quick, convenient and reliable transportation solution when Las Vegas Boulevard is closed to traffic,” said Ingrid Reisman, vice president of corporate communications for the Las Vegas Monorail. “With Monorail trains arriving every few minutes, visitors can travel from the Sahara to MGM Grand in 15 minutes or less.”

From the MGM Grand, race participants and spectators will need to cross the Strip on the pedestrian bridges to the Excalibur, and ride the people mover south to Mandalay Bay.

Visitors can take advantage of the $9 unlimited one-day pass promotional fare, which represents a significant savings from the standard $15 all-day pass. A six-ride party pack ticket is also available for $20, and it can be shared for a total number of six entries onto the Monorail system.

For local marathon participants and spectators, the Sahara station customer service booth will open at 4:30 a.m. Locals who visit the booth can buy single-ride tickets for $1 with a valid Nevada ID. All other customer service booths will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Automated touch-screen ticket vending machines (TVMs) make it convenient to purchase tickets. These TVMs sell tickets 24 hours a day and are located near the entrance of each of the seven Las Vegas Monorail stations: MGM Grand; Bally’s/Paris Las Vegas; Flamingo/Caesars Palace; Harrah’s/Imperial Palace; Las Vegas Convention Center; Las Vegas Hilton; and the Sahara.

LAS VEGAS MONORAIL PART OF GOOGLE TRANSIT’S NEWLY EXPANDED ROUTE PLANNING SERVICE

Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Monorail Company announced today a partnership with Google Transit – a Google product that allows online users to enter the specifics of a destination and utilizes available public transportation options to plot out the most efficient possible step-by-step route and itinerary. The Las Vegas Monorail joined forces with Google Transit to provide data regarding Monorail transportation on the busy and popular Las Vegas Strip.

Google Transit, which has been in operation since December 2005, and has recently been integrated into Google Earth, currently offers public transit information for the following major metropolitan areas: Burbank, Orange County, and San Diego, Calif.; Tampa, Fla.; Honolulu, Hawaii; Duluth, Minn.; Reno, Nev.; Eugene and Portland, Ore.; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Austin, Texas; Seattle, Wash.; and all regional and national rail networks, domestic airlines and ferries in Japan.

Google Transit is similar to Google Maps, except it provides directions using public transportation instead of driving directions. By entering simple information such as starting and ending addresses, and time of day leaving and arriving, the Web site generates a detailed list of transit options including directions with maps, itineraries, estimated trip time, fare cost versus driving comparisons and other options.

Online users are invited to log on to www.google.com/transit to test-drive the technology.
